oye! i'm on the edge of my seat waiting for this government to get on a path i can be proud of. i fear my bum will be numb before they've even begun to realize it's necessary.
i was in turkey for ten days. everyone who spoke english wanted to practice with us -- arranging their schedules to walk with us (or follow, depending on the interpreter) and speak as long as we'd allow. many of them spoke of President Bush and our political responsibility as the hegemon among the world system. it was an honor to give the perspective of an American against Bush and his wrongdoings but heartbreaking at the same time. i felt so responsible. And then to hear the gentleman say he liked Bush in the beginning, along with the rest of Turkey (he says) because Bush was the candidate who promoted there. double oye. by the end of the conversation he mentioned how he hated Obama. Damn his Afghanistan statement.
one last thing. from my experience, the general population in Istanbul knows more about American politics than politically aware Americans. This was an upsetting realization to come to terms with.

Big fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em,
And little fleas have littler fleas, and so on, ad infinitum.
When does the madness stop? It doesn't.
