Summer Love

Today I returned to the Union Square Farmer's Market to do some quick shopping before the remnants of some wicked hurricane hurls its way up the coast toward NYC.

I have something to confess. I always get a bit depressed at the end of the summer months because that means the tomatoes will be going away for a while. Eating a good red or yellow tomato can be a religious experience. Feeding family and friends good tomatoes makes me feel grateful and closer to God.

Alas, September always arrives and my tomato romance must come to an end until next summer. Apples and squash just feel like dating down.....

For me it is the vidalia onions..sauteed in butter till lightly golden. Once they are out of season, I know I am in for a long winter.

Summer squash I love, winter squash is just horrible. Did you ever find a good beet recipe?

We are pulling the last of our homegrown tomatoes from the vines! I get sad too. I wish there was a way to freeze them as is!

I was thinking of canning then, like my grandma used to. Canned tomatoes? Not the same.

they are glorious, though, aren't they? Every night I've been having farmer's market tomatoes, fresh mozarela, basil. That's called a caprese salad??

Gustav got what was left of our summer tomatoes. After Ike does his thing we're going to plant fall tomatoes -- if I can find a spot in my backyard that's not torn up to hell and back or doesn't have construction equipment sitting on it.
